Maple Ridge Back to School Message- Sept 2022

Dear Families,

I hope you all have had a wonderful summer!

We are so excited to be welcoming new and returning Mavericks for the 2022-23 school year! Our staff has been putting their classrooms together and planning and preparing for students' return; our custodial staff have been working hard over the summer to get the building sparkling clean - the school looks great!

Our office is open and using a new system called Aspen. It is a big learning time for all OCDSB employees as we get to know the new system. We appreciate your patience as we navigate through the first few weeks of school.

It has been a challenging couple of years but we are hopeful for a more “typical” school year.  Covid protocols have been relaxed (see below details), which means that children can look forward to playing together on the yard, having increased access to spaces and resources within the school and seeing clubs and activities reintroduced.

Our school is continuing to grow and we received many new registrations over the summer. During the next few weeks, there may be some changes to our classes as we adjust our class sizes.  We will communicate with families at the end of September should changes be necessary.

This year you can expect that information will be communicated 1-2 times a month or as needed through Family Update emails. Information can also be found on the Maple Ridge school website. Also, do not hesitate to reach out and call the school. We are here to help!

We look forward to seeing you and your children soon!

Mireille Filion and Lysanne Darmody

Proud Principal and Vice-Principal of Maple Ridge

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL INFORMATION:

First Day of School for all students JK- Grade 8 is Tuesday, September 6th 2022.

All Grade 1-8 students will find out their teachers’ names and homeroom on the first day. Teachers will be outside around 8:15 with identification by grade and program (English or Immersion) and we will have staff with orange vests helping students find the right homeroom teacher. Kindergarten will be escorted by staff and volunteers to their classrooms. All our Kindergarten students will be wearing coloured pinnies.

Grade 1-3 students will meet near the garden beside the bus loop.

Grade 4-8 will be behind the school near the portable.

Teachers will share their google classroom with you and share the educator team that will support your child this year through email. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with the teacher if you have any questions. Staff will also support transitions as needed.  Please note that due to the complex nature of class placements, requests for class switches will not be considered.

COVID MEASURES:

  • Enhanced Ventilation: All of our classrooms and common spaces are equipped with a HEPA unit.

  • Daily Screening: All parents are encouraged to screen their child daily for any symptoms of cold, flu, or other symptoms using the self assessment tool for schools and child care settings.  Students and staff should STAY HOME if they exhibit any signs of illness.

  • Masks: Masking is voluntary for staff, students and visitors. Schools will be a mask friendly environment where students and staff who choose to wear a mask will be able to do so free of any harassment. Reusable masks will continue to be provided for those who want them.

  • Handwashing/Sanitation: Students will be encouraged to wash or sanitize their hands before and after eating, and to wash or sanitize their hands before and after recess, and upon entering and exiting the classroom/school.

  • Testing Kits: RATs will continue to be available in schools for staff and students who request them. Thes can be requested through the office.

SCHOOL PARKING/DROP OFF

The bus loop (on Provence Ave.) is closed to all family buses from 8:05-8:30 am and from 2:40-3:10pm. We have 4 buses and approximately 6 vehicules (car, SUV or vans) for Special Education students that will be given access to the bus loop in order to support student safe arrival.

If your child arrives after their classes have entered, please have them enter through the front entrance (on Valin St.) regardless of their designated door so that their attendance is captured.

Parking: If you plan on driving your child, please consider parking away from the school and walking a short distance to reduce congestion and traffic in the school zone. Check out OSTA’s resources designed to help students who will be walking, rolling or being driven: Walking School Bus, Walk-a-Block, Walk&Roll Meetup, Walk to School Routes, and Pedestrian Safety Tips. Please be sure to remind your child about street safety these first few days as they adjust to their new school routines.

Bike racks are located near the garden area in the back. Bike locks are strongly recommended. For the safety of all, biking/scootering is not permitted on the sidewalks or on school property - please walk your bikes.

BUSSING:

Please use the OSTA website and online Parent Portal, to find bus stop information for your child(ren). If your child normally uses a yellow bus, we encourage you to sign up to receive notifications and also regularly check the OSTA (bus) website http://www.ottawaschoolbus.ca/

The Empty Seat/Courtesy Seating Program has been temporarily suspended due to an ongoing driver shortage resulting in disruptive long-term and short-term cancellations. The situation will be re-evaluated in November once transportation services have stabilized.

ENTRY & DISMISSAL

If your child(ren) are not bussers or in EDP,  please plan for them to arrive at the school no later than 8:25 am. Students in grades 1-8 will enter through designated doors- B,D or E and line up with their class.  Please note that supervision does not begin until 8:15; out of safety concerns, families should not be dropping their child off prior to this time.

If your child arrives after their classes have entered, please have them enter through the front entrance regardless of their designated door so that their attendance is captured.

Dismissal will take place at 3:00pm  Classes will begin to exit the building at 2:50 and line up in their designated zone (same as the AM) until they are dismissed to parents or walked to the bus for Grade 1-3. Grade 4-8 are responsible to leave the school area after dismissal independently.

EDP will have separate arrival and dismissal plans that will be shared with participating families.

RECESS/NUTRITION

Recess/ Nutrition breaks are from 10:30-11:15 am and 12:35-1:20 pm. Unlike last year, we will no longer be staggering our recesses which means that all students will be out on the yard at the same time. Students will be outside for the first half of every break and then enter for their snack at 10:55/12:55.

WEATHER READY:

Students are encouraged to dress for the weather. Outdoorplay will continue to be encouraged as much as possible, even during light inclement weather. Students should dress ready to go outside in most weather conditions.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

Our school provides some basic school supplies needed for every child: pencil, paper, duo-tangs, eraser, and ruler. If your child prefers to bring their own supplies, we recommend a pencil case, pencil sharpener and personal preference items.  We request proper shoes for indoor Physical Education as well as a reusable water bottle. Please label all your child’s belongings including shoes/clothing so that we can return misplaced items to the owner.

PICK UPS/DROP OFFS

During school hours the doors to Maple Ridge are locked. Visitors and late students can buzz into the office for entry. If you need to pick up your child from school during the day, please call the office with some notice so that we can prepare your child for pickup at a specific time. All students need to be signed in on arrival or signed out if being picked up early.

We kindly ask families to send their child to school prepared for learning. Please limit dropping off non essential items to the school office during the day in order to limit the disruption of students and staff. We keep extra items such as shoes, mittens, utensils and snacks in order to support all students. Urgent essential items such as: extra clothing, medication, glasses only please.

MEDICAL FORMS:

Please complete the new OCDSB 963 - PLAN OF CARE FOR STUDENTS if your child has any severe or life threatening medical conditions( i.e. allergies, epilepsy, diabetes etc.).  Please remember to "SAVE" at the end of the form once completed.  Once the form is saved, a copy of the form will be sent to the school for our records, no paper copy is required.

If your child requires the Oral Administration of Medication at school (including antibiotics or ibuprofen), the school will require the completed form (which also requires a doctor’s signature) prior to administration. Please note that these forms are only valid for the present school year. Please contact the office for more information.

If we have any questions or concerns in regards to your submission we will contact you directly.

Meet the staff at Maple Ridge in late September- more information to come very soon!

STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE

Creating a caring and safe environment for our students is our top priority. Unfortunately, despite all reasonable precautions being taken, accidents can still happen. Some injuries may result in medical, dental or other expenses that are not covered by provincial health care or employer group plans. As a parent/guardian, you become responsible for these expenses.

The OCDSB does not provide student accident insurance coverage for student injuries.  Student accident insurance is available for purchase, on a voluntary basis.  Parents may apply online at  Insure My Kids or call 1-800-463-5437.
