Return to school plan

2020-21 Information

We look forward to safely welcoming students and families back to school!

School will look a bit different this year. On this page, you will find information about our schedule, enhanced health and safety protocols, and more.

It takes a community to help make schools safe and stop the spread of COVID-19. Follow public health guidelines and complete a COVID-19 self-assessment every day before coming to school. For information about the OCDSB Return to School Plan, visit ocdsb.ca/backtoschool2020.

Start Dates

Wednesday, September 16:
Grades 1-3
our DDP class

Thursday, September 17:
Students from prior day
Grades 4-6
Students in year 1 Kindergarten (JK)
Students in year 2 Kindergarten (SK) who are enrolled in the Extended Day Program (EDP).

Friday, September 18:
Students from prior day
Grade 7,8
All remaining year 2 Kindergarten students (i.e., those not enrolled in EDP).

Half of our classes will go outside for recess, while the other half of classes will remain inside to eat. This will allow for decreased movement of groups through our hallways and doors. It will also allow for separate yard areas for each homeroom group.

Health, Safety and Well-Being

There will be increased health and safety measures in every school including hand hygiene, physical distancing, personal protective equipment and more. For more information, visit the Health, Safety and Well-Being page on the OCDSB’s Return to School Plan website.

Before coming to school, students must complete a COVID-19 self-assessment. Students should only come to school if they answer no to all of the questions and have none of the symptoms present on the checklist.

Arrival Routines

For the safety of our students, staff, and community, our school yards and building are restricted to staff only. We will have additional staff available to help with student arrival and dismissal on the first days of school to help.

The following will guide our safe arrival of students:

  • students only on the school yard, please
  • if driving to school, please consider walking a block - our roads and lots will be very busy on the first few days
  • if dropping off, please remain in your vehicle OR park in a designated parking spot
  • kindergarten students will gather in the enclosed kindergarten yard
  • grades 1-8 students will proceed right away to their line and wait until 8:30 am
  • students will line up with their homeroom class, at their designated door
  • dots will help students maintain physical distancing
  • educators will begin instructional time at 8:30 am

Lines  Lines 2 Doors

Click on the coloured rectangle to view the list of homeroom classes/teachers using that designated door.

Recesses will be split into two groups. Each homeroom class will be assigned a zone. We will look at rotating zones periodically (e.g., after 2 weeks).

Classes will end their day at the same designated entrance where they started in the morning. Zones in yellow in the map below show places where you can meet your child. Orange areas are for those who are parking on school property. Click a coloured shap to see details.

  • Reusable cloth masks will be provided and students can bring their own.
  • Students in grades 4 to 8 are required to wear a mask.
  • Students in kindergarten to grade 3 are encouraged to wear a mask.
  • Educators will work with students to promote appropriate use and care of masks.
  • Masks can be taken off at recess (outside). A plastic bag will be provided to students, so they can safely store their mask while outside. Wearing clothing with pockets where the bagged mask can be kept makes this easier.
  • For safety reasons, using lanyards to hang masks is discouraged.

  • Water Bottle: Drinking fountains are closed. Water bottle filling stations are available for use on the first and second floors.
  • Cloth Mask(s): As noted above, cloth masks may be brought from home and/or provided by us. Regular washing is important. Please refer to Ottawa Public Health for more information about mask care and use.
  • Outdoor Clothing: We will be making frequent use of outdoor learning spaces, in different types of weather. Dressing in layers and wearing an appropriate jacket and footwear is important.
  • Indoor Footwear: While we are not asking for indoor shoes at this time (having students store their belongings in their backpacks or in their desks), your child may bring a pair of indoor shoes on a day when boots are needed outside (i.e., rainy days).
  • School Supplies: The OCDSB provides a standard list of supplies. Use the "Parent Resources" section of this website to view the list of school supplies. In some cases, items on this list are not needed. Your child's teacher will communicate these instances with you. Having the basics is helpful (i.e., pencil case, coloured pencils / crayons, scissors, pencil sharpener), but not required.

Inside Preparations

Marking and signs will help reinfoce the safety measures that our educators will be teaching our students to follow. This includes the following list of items. The photos below are meant to help provide a general impression of our set-up.

  • Signage: Ottawa Public Health has provided signs with reminders and instructions to wear masks, wash/sanitize hands, use respiratory etiquette, and maintain physical distancing.
  • Hallway Markings: Tape and visual cues have been placed in our hallways, washrooms, and classrooms to encourage physical distancing.
  • Desk Dividers and Shields: These dividers and shields are in place in all kindergarten, grade 1, 2, and 3 classes. They are also available for educators who need to work more closely with a student.
  • Sanitizing Stations: These are located at each of our entrances. Students and staff sanitize their hands on entrering and exiting our building.
  • Class Layout: Classrooms have been selected for each homeroom group matching the size of the group with the size of the room (allocating larger spaces to our larger classes). Unnecessary furniture and shared seating has been removed to maximize the space available to spread out student desks.
